In 1972, a wooden ship named the Saint Sauveur ran aground in Pompano Beach, Florida. On board were 65 Haitian refugees fleeing severe political and economic hardship. As the first documented mass exodus of Haitian refugees to the United States, their grueling journey ultimately became a profound symbol of resilience and the literal beginning of the modern Haitian-American story.
Now, more than five decades later, that legacy is being honored in a deeply personal way.
Grammy-nominated artist Melky Jean—the younger sister of music icon Wyclef Jean—has launched Saint Sauveur 1972, a premium rum brand created to keep that history alive. Founded by Jean and officially introduced during Haitian Heritage Month, the brand is a heartfelt tribute to both the refugees’ journey and Jean’s own family roots. Spirits run deep in her lineage; her grandmother was a skilled moonshiner, and her mother was a master artisan of Kremas, a traditional Haitian holiday drink.
Saint Sauveur 1972 is crafted for both casual sipping and cocktail enthusiasts, offering two distinct expressions: A two year aged finish with a smooth expression when open inviting a aromas of toasted coconut, sweet vanilla, and a hint of subtle caramel. On the palate, it delivers a beautifully balanced blend of aged rum and tropical coconut, rounded out by the natural sweetness of white cane sugar. It leaves a lingering, creamy warmth on the finish.
For a deeper experience, the 4-year reserve Reserve 750ml 80 Proof brings a sophisticated notes of toasted oak, caramel, and vanilla to the nose. The taste is a rich, smooth balance of mature rum and natural cane sugar, accented by a very subtle hint of smokiness. It wraps up with a warm, lingering finish highlighted by gentle spice and rich caramel.
To celebrate the retail rollout, Saint Sauveur 1972 held its very first official in-store event at Total Wine & More. Hosted by Melky and Wyclef Jean, the launch turned into a vibrant celebration of Caribbean culture.
With DJ Stakz spinning, live dancers performing, and infectious carnival rhythms filling the room, the event captured the exact energy and resilience the brand stands for. The celebration also drew high-profile special guests, including media personality K. Foxx and artist Black Dada, marking a major milestone for this historic, woman-owned brand.
